Background of the Study
Traditional gender roles have historically dictated the expectations and behaviors of married women in many communities, including Akinyele Local Government Area. These roles, deeply rooted in cultural and societal norms, often impose limitations on women’s autonomy and self-expression (Olaoye, 2023). In Akinyele, the adherence to prescribed gender roles can lead to psychological distress, feelings of inadequacy, and diminished self-esteem when personal aspirations conflict with societal expectations (Babatunde, 2024). Recent literature highlights that the internalization of these roles may result in chronic stress and depressive symptoms, affecting overall mental health (Adebisi, 2025). This study critically examines how traditional gender roles influence the psychological well-being of married women, exploring the interplay between cultural expectations, family dynamics, and personal identity. It aims to uncover the underlying mechanisms that lead to adverse mental health outcomes and to identify possible interventions that empower women while respecting cultural contexts.
Statement of the Problem
Married women in Akinyele are adversely affected by rigid traditional gender roles that restrict their personal growth and contribute to psychological distress. The pressure to conform to societal expectations often results in chronic stress, low self-esteem, and mental health challenges. Despite evolving cultural dynamics, these traditional roles remain deeply embedded, limiting opportunities for empowerment and personal development. There is a need to systematically explore the psychological effects of these roles on married women to identify pathways for intervention and improvement (Olaoye, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the influence of traditional gender roles on the psychological well-being of married women.
To identify the mental health challenges associated with conforming to these roles.
To recommend interventions that empower women while respecting cultural values.
Research Questions:
How do traditional gender roles affect the mental health of married women in Akinyele?
What are the key psychological challenges linked to these roles?
Which interventions can alleviate the negative effects of traditional gender expectations?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional gender roles negatively impact married women’s psychological well-being.
Conformity to traditional roles is associated with increased stress and low self-esteem.
Empowerment interventions can mitigate adverse psychological effects.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of how traditional gender roles affect married women’s mental health in Akinyele. The findings are expected to inform culturally sensitive interventions and policies aimed at promoting gender equality and psychological well-being among women (Babatunde, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring the effects of traditional gender roles on the psychological well-being of married women in Akinyele Local Government Area, focusing solely on cultural influences and mental health outcomes.
Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Gender Roles: Societal expectations dictating behaviors and responsibilities based on gender.
